WANTED: SENIOR SCIENTIST

VSPC, an Australian materials technology company, is a subsidiary of ASX-listed resources company Lithium Australia NL (ASX: LIT). It was established to develop and commercialise a unique manufacturing process that produces complex metal oxides at the nano-scale.

With a 14-year history, VSPC is recognised globally for its production of high-performance cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. Today, VSPC is focused on developing the world’s best next-generation cathode materials for use in safer, more environmentally friendly rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles.

Lithium Australia and VSPC having joined forces, VSPC will now expedite recommissioning of its Wacol (Brisbane) based pilot plant for cathode production and trialling. The aim is to produce materials for testing by major battery cell manufacturers as soon as Q4 2018.

In light of this, VSPC will be seeking key team members to participate in what should prove to be a very exciting journey.

Currently, VSPC is looking to engage an experienced senior scientist to manage research, planning, test work and laboratory functions at the pilot plant.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the following.

  • Operating the pilot plant laboratory, incorporating QC instruments and product development mini-plant equipment.
  • Providing QC services for cathode material production and product development.
  • Managing and implementing appropriate QA and information management systems and practices.
  • Ensuring that laboratory operations are sufficiently resourced to provide the company with high-quality testing services.
  • Managing laboratory workflow, including the Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) interface, OHS and record-keeping.
  • Ensuring the maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment and coordinating service checks.
  • Writing and updating as required laboratory analytical procedures.
  • Establishing a knowledgeable and informed technical interface with the company’s customers and suppliers.
  • Planning, implementing and managing research projects.
  • Managing resource allocation within the laboratory, and associated activities.
  • Providing problem-solving input to process chemistry challenges.
  • Ensuring the company remains up to date regarding industry technology developments.
  • Participating in the development of new products and production processes.
  • Operating mini-plant equipment for small-scale product manufacture.
  • Developing test methods from first principles.
  • Trouble-shooting test methods at both laboratory and plant level as required.
  • Providing technical support and training for laboratory processes and process optimisation.
  • Reporting to and liaising with senior management to keep them informed of developments with R&D projects.
  • Writing scientific protocols and reports for regulatory submissions.

To be eligible for this position, applicants must have the following qualifications, experience and attributes.

  • Bachelor of Science (chemistry or materials science) or higher degree, or other relevant qualifications (a PhD in science or materials engineering preferred).
  • A minimum of 10 years’ postgraduate experience in a senior science role in the field of advanced nano-materials, electrochemistry, battery materials and/or complex metal/oxide materials. (Exposure to production processes, while not mandatory, would be advantageous.)
  • Sound knowledge of laboratory standards and maintenance of records for relevant bodies, with demonstrated experience in OH&S compliance in all areas of a laboratory.
  • Familiarity with testing of electrochemical materials, and in electron microscopy (exposure to battery-cell testing will be well-regarded).
  • Experience with XRD and SEM equipment. (Experience with battery half-cell assembly and testing will be well-regarded.)
  • Expertise in laboratory-scale synthesis of materials.
  • First-rate written report and presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • General computer literacy, including a good working knowledge of word-processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Proven expertise in project leadership, budget management, procurement, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with colleagues and external service providers as well as customers (in a technical sales capacity).
  • The ability to represent the company in a technical capacity in forums and with regulatory agencies.

Currently, VSPC is looking to engage an experienced senior process engineer to oversee and manage the pilot plant. In this highly rewarding and valued role, the successful applicant will be responsible for the following.

  • Directing pilot plant operations and maintenance, including leadership of operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Managing production, including planning, personnel scheduling and data collection, and overseeing initial recruitment processes.
  • Supervising pilot plant design, including coordination of and interface with designers and contractors for pilot plant upgrades and trials.
  • Developing procedures for plant operation, including compilation of technical information for full-scale plant design.
  • Participating as a member of the full-scale multidisciplinary plant design team.
  • Delivering production, cost and quality specifications for product qualification with customers.
  • Developing/managing ongoing changes and improvements, including optimisation of processes and technologies to expand plant capabilities and capacity.
  • Establishing an effective network of technical relationships at plant level, as well as with service providers and research and engineering organisations.
  • Contributing to the body of knowledge required to advance plant and process technologies and capabilities.
  • Encouraging performance excellence and facilitating corporate manufacturing/engineering initiatives as required.

  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience as a senior engineer or production manager within a project environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams in meeting continuous improvement goals, making step change process improvements, managing innovation and expanding technical capability.
  • Proven expertise in managing production budgets and schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with colleagues, customers and external service providers.
  • A sound understanding of multidisciplinary project scope – inclusive of mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation, civil, structural and process, etc.

Previous employment on a successful pilot plant project will be highly regarded, as will experience ranging from commissioning through to operations.
